Wicker furniture is attractive, but cleaning wicker patio furniture, with all of its grooves and crevices, can be a challenge. Keeping your wicker pieces dust-free and sparkling not only makes them look more inviting, but it increases the life of the furniture. Follow the tips below for easy cleaning.

Dusting Wicker Furniture

Clean dust and dirt off of wicker patio furniture by brushing the piece lightly with a dry paintbrush (that's never been used for painting). After you've loosened the dirt, vacuum the piece gently with the brush attachment to your sweeper. Any stubborn dirt can be removed carefully with a pair of tweezers.

Dealing with Stains

Don't let stains keep you from enjoying your wicker patio furniture. Most stains will respond to a simple cleaning solution of 2 Tbsp. of ammonia diluted in a gallon of water. To use, first make sure that the surface is clean of dust and dirt particles.  Then, gently scrub the stained area with a soft-bristled cleaning brush. Repeat if necessary. Allow the piece to dry thoroughly, in the sun if possible.

Removing Mildrew from Wicker Patio Furniture

If you see mildew or mold beginning to form on your wicker patio furniture, don't ignore it. Mold and mildew are living organisms and will spread and eat the wicker if left to their own devices.

Use a bleach solution to combat mold and mildew. Mix a half cup of bleach with a gallon of water. Clean the surface well and then scrub gently with the bleach solution. Repeat until all signs of the mildew are gone. Rinse with clear water and allow to dry well in the sun or other warm place. Do not sit in or use the piece for two or three days to allow it to dry completely.

To avoid mildew, place your wicker furniture out of the way of direct rainfall or moisture. Store the pieces in a dry place during the off-season.

Cleaning Seat Cushions

Using seat cushions on your wicker patio furniture not only looks stylish and is comfortable, but cushions add years to the life of your wicker pieces. Choose cushions designed for indoor/outdoor use; they are made of mildew-retardent material.

To clean your cushions, use a mixture of dish soap and water and wipe down with a rag. Allow the cushions to dry thoroughly, in the sun if possible. To freshen them, sprinkle a little carpet freshener on dry cushions.
